I am a couple months late on this one but back on April 25, 2013, the Daily News reported that the original Pinecrest School at the corner of Sherman Way and Hazeltine in Van Nuys will be demolished this fall to make way for a new housing development approved by the City Council which is expected to be completed in 12 to 18 months. The campus is located at 14111 and 14135 Sherman Way and 7235 and 7301 N. Hazeltine Avenue. The architect firm is Van Tilburg, Banvard, & Soderbergh A.I.A. (VTBS) based out of Santa Monica.

The 62 year old campus which started in 1951 will close down to build 4 traditional single family homes, 131 single family homes, and a park. Students and staff will be relocated to the other Pinecrest schools in the area which are unaffected by this development and will actually benefit from the proceeds. You typically hear and see many apartment and condominum projects going up so this is a first that I have heard of lately in awhile for such a large housing project in the SFV.

Is this a situation where we are losing education for more housing? And does the Van Nuys community really want this? I guess it doesnt matter seeing how a majority of their neighboring properties are apartments where the occupants dont have any interest.
