A 1963 Woodland Hills home designed by Charles Du Bois has returned to the market at $2.595 million. At 5576 El Canon Avenue, vaulted wood ceilings, a double-sided fireplace and doors opening toward the pool give a substantial contemporary remodel its midcentury framework.

A midcentury interior with a contemporary finish

The current listing describes an extensive reworking of the single-story house, pairing exposed ceiling beams with white oak flooring, smooth plaster surfaces and custom white oak kitchen cabinetry. A double-sided fireplace serves the living and dining areas, while folding doors connect the interior to the backyard.

The kitchen includes a large walk-in pantry, and the primary suite has two walk-in closets. A Control4 home automation system adds another contemporary layer. These are features described by the listing; the available material does not establish the renovation’s full scope or which finishes are original.

Outside, a pool and spa, gazebo and several seating areas make the yard a major part of the offering. The listing also highlights mountain and city-light views. A listing photograph shows the pool and circular spa framed by palms and mature landscaping at dusk.

Another chapter in the Valley’s Du Bois story

The broader context is substantial. The Los Angeles Conservancy credits Du Bois with approximately 1,300 residences in Woodland West, developed in phases and completed in 1964. It describes a neighborhood of broad lots, low-pitched gables, deep eaves and prominent entrances. That neighborhood history provides context for his western Valley work. SFV Blog’s review of the building permits for 5576 El Canon Avenue confirms Charles Du Bois as the architect.

1988 permits for the backyard and bathing facilities

Permit-history details supplied for this article document several changes in 1988:

  • October 6, 1988: A permit was pulled for an 11-by-12-foot gazebo.
  • October 6, 1988: A separate permit was pulled for a 15-by-34-foot swimming pool.
  • November 28, 1988: A permit was pulled to add a bath, shower and locker room.

These are permit dates; they do not establish when the work was completed or received final approval.

A lower asking price this fall

The property appeared at $2.75 million in June. Redfin’s live listing history now records an October 12 offering at $2.595 million, a $155,000 reduction from that earlier ask. The recorded March 2024 sale was $1.685 million. The difference between that sale and today’s asking price does not account for renovation or selling expenses.

The current marketing places the house squarely in the renovated architectural-home category, with the pool, views and contemporary interiors sharing the billing with Du Bois’s name.
