A brief history of Eichler homes
Developer Joseph Eichler helped bring modern architecture to middle-class California buyers. By the 1950s, Eichler Homes was building thousands of houses in the San Francisco Bay Area, working with leading architects to make light-filled, thoughtfully planned homes available on a larger scale. His approach also extended to access: Eichler rejected restrictions on buyers based on race or religion.
Balboa Highlands brought that vision to Granada Hills between 1962 and 1964. Designed by Claude Oakland and the partnership of A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons, its homes pair understated street fronts with open atriums and glass walls facing the courtyard and backyard. It was one of just three Southern California developments Eichler completed—a small but distinctive part of the Valley’s architectural history. An atrium, mahogany and walls of glass
The listing describes original mahogany paneling, exposed beams, clerestory windows and polished concrete floors, with a wood-burning fireplace and glass walls opening toward a backyard with hillside and mountain views.
