The former Van Nuys rental home of LA Gangster, Mickey Cohen, hit the market on August 4, 2015 for $459,900 and immediately went into a pending status the next day.
Cohen's mobster ways were active from 1930 to 1960 where he worked under Bugsy Siegel. In 1939, Cohen helped set up the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas and ran its sports book operation. As with all gangsters, the law eventually caught up with him and he faced prison time for tax evasion in 1951 for 4 years. When he was released in 1955, he became an international celebrity and ran numerous businesses including nightclubs, floral shops, casinos, and gas stations. At the time, he was living in Brentwood where he was again facing tax evasion and later rented this Van Nuys home for several years in the late 50's before being convicted in 1961.
Cohen was portrayed in many movies including Bugsy (1991) by Harvey Keitel, L.A. Confidential (1997) by Paul Guilfoyle, Gangster Squad (2013) by Sean Penn, and Mob City (2013) by Jeremy Luke.

Cohen's Van Nuys rental is widely known as mentioned at The Valley News published on December 31, 1961, The Movieland Directory (including his other LA addresses), and LA Curbed (including his other LA addresses).
The home located 13841 Wyandotte St measures 2 Beds/2 Baths on 1,218 sqft on a total lot size of 7,443 sqft built in 1951. There is only one listing picture of the home (shown above) and no listing description. To put the homes location in perpsective, it is north of Sherman Way and west of Woodman not too far from the old Schlitz Brewery. The current owners are Allan and Angela Clair, who work in advertising, and purchased the home back on March 27, 1978 for $76,000!!!! It appears that they are selling as they may have retired and moved to Florida. I am pretty sure they know the history of this home.

ReplyDeleteI was 14 when we rented the home from Mickey Cohen's girl friend, in I believe 1961.. I am now 73 years old. I remember all the talcum powder, all over the bathroom, and the entire house. We were told that he took many showers each day. His girlfriend told us that. Any way, you can ad a child molester to the list of people who were in the house, as my adopted father was a child mloester, and I was the child.
