Celeb R.E.: The Eurythmics Dave Stewart Buys and Sells Historic Toluca Lake Homes

Back on March 13, 2015, the always hilarious, Your Mama, at Variety Realestalker revealed that legendary British producer and musician, Dave Stewart, of the 80's hit band, Eurythmics, purchased a historic and celebrity filled Toluca Lake home (shown above) for $5.550 million on March 2, 2015. (Later on, I will discuss the home currently for sale).

Stewart first met lead singer Annie Lennox (who also owned an Encino home in the 80's that was recently purchased by Howie Mandel) in late 1976 and became romantically involved. By 1977, they teamed up with Peet Coombes and formed The Catch. They later became known as The Tourists and then by the early 80's were known as the Eurythmics. The group is best known for their second album, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) released in 1983 with the title track a worldwide hit. By 1990, they split up but with numerous awards and more than 75 million records sold worldwide. They later reunited like most bands do in 1999 - 2005 and 2014. See the video below for the most famous hit song.

Now moving onto the home which measures 5 Beds/6 Baths on 4,761 sqft on a total lot size of 0.61 acres built in 1927. The listing description states:
Santa Barbara style authentic & chic Spanish estate with two significant guest buildings/offices. Hip interior, impressive entry, walled & private, this is one of the select homes built on Lakeside golf course & one of the original Toluca Lake homes built by Toluca Lake pioneer and designer W. Klump. Famous for Howard Hughes/silent movie star Billy Dove ownership & the Greta Garbo/Janet Gaynor fight to win the house, this compound is rich with entertainment industry/celebrity gatherings and documented history. Recently restored/renovated. Celeb heavy neighborhood, minutes from the studios and networks, 5 minutes into Hollywood.
According to the listing, the home was built and designed by William Klump whose home was also featured on this site here and here. Hollywood's elite also had a piece of this property with Howard Hughes and silent film star Billie Dove  owning it. Later Greta Garbo and Janet Gaynor battled for the property but dont know who actually owned it. Also, Your Mama noticed that it was also owned by sitcom producer Mark Brazill (whose other homes have been featured here) who purchased in the mid-90's and later sold to film and TV producer, Laura McCorkindale in 2006 for $4.5 million.

Moving onto Stewart's previous home, also in Toluca Lake, which is currently listed for $4,499,000 as of April 27, 2015 with no buyers at the time of writing this post. Your Mama at the Realestalker also first revealed this property's listing on April 28, 2015. The home measures 4 Beds/4.25 Baths on 5,426 sqft on a total lot size of 0.26 acres built in 1929. The listing description states:
This Spanish-style retreat was home to Toluca Lake's original architect Park French and features 4 beautiful bedrooms-3 of which are en suite-and 5 baths. Gorgeous wood floors and highlights throughout give the home a rustic charm. In addition to the living, family and dining rooms, there's a breakfast room, library, soundproof media room and steam room. The bright kitchen features a Viking stove and sub-zero fridge. The lush grounds boast a heated pool, organic herb garden, heated dining terrace and covered exercise deck. A gated dog area connects to a 2-car garage with a washer-dryer area and built-in storage. Modern amenities, such as a filtered water system and backup generator in case of a black-out, are married to classic features like a wood-burning fireplace and original stained glass windows, making this stunning property the perfect combination of vintage and contemporary. Ownership comes with a boat mooring and private access to Toluca Lake Residential Garden & Lake.

And moving onto Stewart's other SFV property which was located in Encino that was owned sometime during the 80's and 90's but not really sure when it was exactly purchased and sold. The home was located next door to Lennox (now owned by Howie Mandel). The last transaction on the property was a sale on October 31, 1994 for $1.3 million which might be Stewart selling.  The home was later torn down and built new in 2007. The current home measures 6 Beds/8 Baths on 8,604 sqft on a total lot size of 1.25 acres.

Additionally, there are a few stories online describing how Encino resident, Tom Petty, recommended Stewart purchase a home who happened to buy a block down from Petty. After the house was purchased, Stewart kept adding onto the home susposedly without permits and even added a recording studio. There are also stories about how the two would party at each other's house. And lastly, there is a story of Annie Lennox hanging out at Stewart's home when Petty's house was set on fire on an early 1987 morning by arsonists and providing clothes after Petty lost everything. You can also view a Getty Image of Stewart inside his Encino home here. (Sources: here, here, and here).

James Cagney Ranch Update with Slideshow and Article (BTTF# 17a)

Friday, October 4, 2013 / 4 Comments
Back in June 2013, I received an email from Rick Miseroy regarding the James Cagney Ranch in Granada Hills who explored that area as a teenager in the 70's and again in the 80's. Coincidentally, Rick also had an interest in photography at that time and captured some amazing photos of the area prior to major development took place marking the entire area unrecognizable to its original roots today.

I too have been fascinated with this site that I wrote a blog post about it capturing what I can find mostly on the internet and some books back in March 2013 which can be found here which is what prompted Rick to contact me to share our research (mostly his). I feel extremely fortunate to have been contacted by Rick who pointed out some errors in that post and even provided some documentation and more amazing photos which is shown below (note: you may not be able to view the Scribd documents if viewing outside of the blogger webpage such as email, RSS feeds, mobile, etc.). Rick has become somewhat of an expert in regards to the James Cagney ranch and his hard work and dedication to preserve this area's history is well commended.

Enjoy the slide slow and article from Rick below including some additional photos at the bottom of the ranch and main home. You can view my original blog post on this topic with more historical photographs here

Below are three additional photos provided by Rick:

Aerial view of the Sunshine Ranch. This was probably taken in the 1920s. This picture is facing north. The street that runs from the lower right to about the middle left of the picture is Rinaldi St. Somewhere near the middle of Rinaldi you'll see a street that runs perpendicular to it with a bunch of buildings. This street is Shoshone. The street that intersects Shoshone at an angle is Mayerling. If you follow Mayerling all the way back you can barely make out the green water tank at the end of Zelzah. At the corner of Shoshone and Mayerling you can see the orange grove where St. Eurphasia Church now stands. If you follow Shoshone up a little farther you can see Highwater Road and the green water tank on it. If you look just to the left of Rinaldi and Shoshone you can see a large white building which was the ranch house. It was torn down just a few years ago. Just behind and to the left of the house you can see the letters SR, for Sunshine Ranch, in the hillside. Continuing to the left of the ranch house on Rinaldi you can see White Oak going south. It looks like a white line.

Sunshine Ranch, this picture is looking north from about San Fernando Mission between Shoshone and White Oak. I don't know if you can see it but the SR letters are barely visible on the hillside in the middle of the picture. And in the background of course is an undisturbed Mission Peak.

BTTF# 17: The James Cagney Ranch in Granada Hills

Wednesday, March 6, 2013 / 3 Comments

[Update October 4, 2013]: In addition to the June 17th update noted below, I have received additional pictures and documentation from Rick Miseroy regarding the history of the James Cagney Ranch which can be found in a new post here. I have also found out from Rick that the main home of the ranch still remains which I incorrectly mentioned in this post as being nothing remains which is corrected below and updated with pictures in the new post. That post also contains photos of the main home from 1986 - 1988 provided by Rick in addition to current photos that I provided.

Update June 17, 2013]: I received an email update from Rick Miseroy who spent his teen years on the ranch and was coincidentally interested in photography who captured many photos at the time. He provided some details on the pictures below and exact address location of the ranch which was 17801 Bull Canyon Road which I will share below noted with [update]:.

[Original Post]:

Welcome aboard the Delorean! Marty McFly here to take you on a journey to the former James Cagney Ranch in Granada Hills. The Delorean has the required plutonium plus some random garbage in the Mr. Fusion reactor ready for this trip. The time circuits are set to sometime in 1953 and the flux capacitor is......fluxxing. The engine is running (not stalled this time) so we need to hurry. Hang on, as the ride can be a little bumpy as we travel back in time to explore the James Cagney Ranch at Bradford and Jacqueline Place (approximately 12450 Jacqueline Place; note this is not the actual address for the Cagney Ranch but a reference for the current location) [Update]: "the actual address location was 17801 Bull Canyon Road."

James Francis Cagney, Jr (July 17, 1899 – March 30, 1986) was an American actor, first on stage, then in film, where he had his greatest impact. Although he won acclaim and major awards for a wide variety of performances, he is best remembered for playing tough guys. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him eighth among its 50 Greatest American Screen Legends (Wikipedia).

Cagney was a legend in Hollywood and there are too many accomplishements and quotes to mention here that I recommend visiting his Wikipedia page to learn more. One of Cagney's favorite hobbies was horse riding and his ranches which in addition to his Granada Hills ranch also owned ranches in Martha's Vineyard and Verney Farms in New York.

There is very little information about the Cagney ranch but I was able to find some useful info from the  book Granada Hills by Jim Hier:
In 1939, construction began on a Thoroughbred stud farm named Rancho Oro Grande, north of the old Sunshine Ranch. The ranch was sold in 1942 to actress Janet Gaynor and her husband, Gilbert Adrian. The ranch, became known as Bull Canyon Meadows according to Gaynor's son, Robin Adrian.
In 1953, the ranch was again sold, this time to the actor James Cagney, seen here in 1956 at the entrance to the ranch. Cagney used the ranch for raising horses but visited frequently, as did members of the Cagney family. Though the Cagneys enjoyed the ranch, they decided to sell in 1966 because of the encroachment of developers.

[Update]: "this photo was taken in the 1980's not earlier as seen with the housing development in the background." [SFVblog]: I should have known better considering this is in color.

The Cagney Ranch appears to have sold to James Roache in 1966, an African American ex-rodeo star who grew up on a Tennessee farm, according to the article, "California Rancher", of the January 1966 issue of Ebony Magazine. Roache was the only African American in Granada hills at that time but was highly respected since he moved in 1964 (this date conflicts with the date that the Cagney's sold so I am not sure which is true). This is amazing considering that the civil rights movement was all the rage in the South and African Americans were still discriminated against. Even obtaining a mortgage was difficult regardless if the buyer could afford it. The article also goes on to mention that the Ranch was named Triple-A. I recommend clicking on the link to the article to view more pictures of the ranch and Roache.

I am not sure how long Roache owned the ranch but development soon took over sometime in the late 80's and early 90's which is pretty much how it still stands today. And the rest is history with no traces left behind of the original ranch except for the land. ([Update]: The main home of the ranch actually still exists today and photos can be found in an updated post here). However, there was a recent real estate listing claiming to be the largest single parcel left of the James Cagney Ranch at 12001 Highwater Road which sold for $1,050,000 in October 2009.

As mentioned above, there is very little information about the ranch like address, boundaries, square footage, etc. The exact address remains a mystery to me but the Movieland Directory shows two addresses in the SFV for Cagney. The first address which I believe is the ranch is 17431 Beach Drive in Granada Hills which unfortunately doesnt exist today.  The website claims this address to be a 1970's historical or correspondence records which doesnt match the Granada Hills book claims that the Cagneys sold the house in 1966 but maybe the Movieland Directory is off a decade. The second address is 19056 Plummer Street which is actually the location of  the former Louella Parsons home and farm (not too far from the Northridge Mall) which I discussed before here.  In a confirmation of my historical accuracy, I mentioned that Cagney also lived in that home in that post based on the realtor's listing description.

Movielanddirectory.com
If we also look at Janet Gaynor's profile in the Movieland Directory, one address from Northridge is listed which is 18600 Devonshire Street which is a 1940s historical or correspondence records. This may also be the location of the Cagney ranch but very difficult to confirm. There is also a North Hollywood address listed but clearly that is not related to this ranch.

Now its time to jump back into the Delorean and go Back To The Future starting in 1952, 1959, 1969, 1972, 1980, 1986, 1994, and today.

In a June 11, 1993 LA Times article by Jill Leovy, Granada Hills: Planners Oppose Mall on Ranch Site, the LA Planning commission rejected a proposal by the Richard J. Mazurek Living Trust for a supermarket, day-care center, and two story office complex at 17900 Sesnon Blvd which is at the corner of Cascade Canyon Drive. So this area was close to being heavily developed but surprisingly the city voted against it. Imagine that! So it appears they instead built homes which I guess is better than traffic running up and down Sesnon.

Cagney's name still lives on in Granada Hills but this is not near the former location.
The Chatsworth/Northridge/Granada Hills area was also the location of many celebrity "ranch homes" during the 30's through 60's including Lucille Ball, Jackie Oakie, Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Taylor, Josef Von  Sternberg, and Zeppo Marx to name a few. This area was labeled "Valleywood" by Kevin Roderick, author of America's Suburb: San Fernando Valley, because of the many celebrities who built "vacation" ranch houses to get away from the Hollywood/Beverly Hills surroundings. This blog will continue to explore these "Valleywood" ranches so stay tuned.
