Celebrity Real Estate | Encino
Gilbert Arenas’s former Encino home is being offered for $39,995 a month. The Tuscan-inspired property at 4550 Gable Drive combines a pool and spa, broad Valley views, and a beamed great room opening onto outdoor entertaining spaces.
A familiar house returns as a rental
Longtime readers may remember the blog’s November 2015 coverage of Arenas’s Encino home. At the time, the former NBA player was asking $3.495 million after purchasing the property for $3.1 million in 2007. The current listing history records another $3.1 million sale in December 2022.
Arenas’s connection adds a local thread to the property’s history: the blog’s earlier story identified him as a Grant High School alumnus raised in Valley Glen. He is also featured in the blog’s San Fernando Valley Sports Legends: Athletes & Trading Cards Directory.
Unverified clues in the earlier property history
Propwire’s property-history summary shows a transfer to the 4550 Gable Trust in September 2004 and names Nancy E. Humphries alongside that trust in the 2007 transfer to Gilbert Arenas. O’Dell is a television host and entertainment journalist known for Access Hollywood and Entertainment Tonight. Nancy O’Dell’s birth name is Nancy Evelyn Humphries. The name similarity raises the possibility that O’Dell was associated with the property and may have lived here during the trust’s 2004–2007 period, but we have not verified that the person in the records is O’Dell, her ownership interest, or her residence at the house.
For a separate piece of her real estate history, The Real Deal reported that O’Dell purchased a Wallace Neff-designed home on Lombardy Road in Pasadena for $5.4 million in 2007—the same year as the Gable Drive transfer to Arenas. That timing is interesting, but does not independently establish that O’Dell was the seller of this Encino property.
The earlier mortgage history introduces another familiar television name: Howie Mandel. Propwire’s summary lists him as the lender on a $700,000 loan recorded on June 22, 2004, naming Anthony J. and Lisa A. Magnone as borrowers. Mandel is the comedian and television personality known for hosting Deal or No Deal and judging America’s Got Talent; his career biography also includes acting and voice work.
One possible interpretation is that Mandel lent money to the previous owners before the later trust purchase. That explanation remains speculative: we have not independently verified the loan documents, its purpose, or any personal relationship between those parties. The entry does not establish that Mandel owned or lived at the property.
In 2014, Mandel bought Encino land formerly owned by Annie Lennox of Eurythmics. The blog covered that purchase in its June 2014 celebrity real estate roundup. He sold a Hidden Hills home for $9.5 million in 2020. These reported transactions involve other properties and do not resolve the Gable Drive lending question.
These are leads for further research, not confirmed celebrity ownership or occupancy findings. The trust’s 2004–2007 dates should not be attributed to either O’Dell or Mandel as a verified period of residence.
Beamed ceilings and a poolside setting
A long driveway leads to the gated property. Inside, the listing describes hardwood and travertine floors, multiple fireplaces, and a great room with roughly 18-foot ceilings. The photographs show exposed wood beams, a tall stone fireplace, and glass doors connecting the living spaces to the outdoor entertaining area.
The kitchen includes Viking appliances, double ovens, a six-burner range with a griddle, and a farmhouse sink. Three bedrooms are on the main level, with two more upstairs, including the primary suite. The advertisement offers the house furnished or unfurnished, with a three-car garage and additional parking.
Outside, the pool and spa sit beside a terrace and outdoor kitchen. The hillside setting opens toward Valley and city-light views, giving the property’s indoor-outdoor layout much of its appeal. See the current rental description and gallery for the complete offering.
An unusual second layer to the listing
The current advertisement says the house is being used as a six-bed adult residential recovery and treatment facility. It separately advertises a $495,000 licensing or certificate opportunity for a qualified operator, subject to state approval and other requirements. A potential intensive outpatient opportunity at a separate West Los Angeles location is also described as distinct from the Encino lease.
Those are the listing agent’s representations, rather than independently verified licensing findings. They explain why the offering deserves a closer read beyond the celebrity connection and the pool photos.
