Filming Locations: CSI Miami: Season 1 Episode 23: Reseda Barn Explosion

CSI: Miami (Crime Scene Investigation: Miami) is an American police procedural television series that ran from September 23, 2002, to April 8, 2012, on CBS. It is the first spin-off of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
The pilot episode was first broadcast in the United States on May 9, 2002, as a season 2 episode of CSI. The series was produced in partnership with the Canadian media company Alliance Atlantis and CBS Television Studios.
CSI: Miami follows Crime Scene Investigators working for the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) as they use physical evidence, similar to their Las Vegas counterparts, to solve grisly murders. The series mixes deduction, gritty subject matter, and character-driven drama in the same vein as the original series in the CSI franchise, except that the Miami CSIs are cops first, scientists second.
On February 1, 2012, the network announced that the 10th season of CSI: Miami would be trimmed to 19 episodes to make room for the debut of mid-season replacement NYC 22. On May 13, 2012, both series were canceled (Wikipedia).

The CSI TV series was heavily filmed in Los Angeles primarily the beach areas like Manhattan Beach, Long Beach, and Redondo Beach to resemble Miami with parts of Florida actually used in filming. I never watched this show but was aware of it due to its huge popularity. The twitter handle +myVCRstillworks asked me if I knew about a Reseda barn explosion located roughly at 8200 Tampa Avenue used in season 1, episode 23, "Freaks and Tweaks" which aired on May 12, 2003. I was unaware of it but was highly curious which led to my investigative hunt. Lets first start off with the images of the barn explosion from CSI: Miami.

Regarding the historical facts about the Reseda Barn, I wasnt able to find much including the actual address so below is what I could gather:
  1. The 1952 image below show that a small portion of the barn existed in the center of the picture.
  2. Sometime in the late 1960's or early 1970's, the barn was added with a wing.
  3. In 2003, the barn was destroyed in the CSI: Miami TV episode.
  4. Afterwards, a company called Tampa Homes LLC purchased the property for an unknown amount and date and built 16 single family homes (appear to be identical) measuring about 4 Beds/3 Baths on 2,663 sqft in 2006 and marketed for sale for around $715K. Most of the homeowners defaulted on these homes during the bust years and were purchased for almost half of their value in the $400K - $450K range from 2011 - 2013.

In 1959, the barn can be seen in the center of the picture.
By 1980, it looks like the barn has expanded with a wing that may have added in the late 60's or early 70's. I dont know because the historical pictures arent available from that period.
This image was taken in 2003 which had to be before filming took place and completely destroyed it.

As a bonus, the Reseda Petting Zoo known as the Farm was located next door at 8108 Tampa Avenue but relocated to 21910 Chatsworth Street in Chatsworth in 2012. You can view old pics of the Petting Zoo and a discussion of the latest development to a Chinese Language Private Academy school here.
